Covers

by Tyler Brownfield

1. Popular Demand For Antiques (Grandiose) (4:06) - A rehash once again of probably our simplest Grandiose song, though fun to play. There are only 4 unique lines of vocals. I use this song as a practice in a way when trying new equipment, since I can play it in my sleep. This version has some spiced up yelling on the vox and I added a guitar solo in F# as well. On this one, it’s me doing the drums on the keyboard (vs programmed on Garage Band). From July 2020.

2. Magic Fingers (Frank Zappa) (3:41) - From the Zappa movie 200 Motels, that I first watched with Garrett back in like 97. Originally featuring Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman (The Turtles, Flo & Eddie) on vocals. Note: the guitar is one take - I figured Zappa would want me to nail the whole thing. (it’s not perfect - but I didn’t get tired, my fangers just got stuck). From July 2020.

3. Fisticuffs (Primus) (4:18) - One of my favorites to play with Derek. Easy enough to play and sing, but still plenty of Primus-ness for sure. One of my first times playing guitar on this song which was fun. From July 2020.

4. Don’t Get too Close (To My Fantasy) (Ween) (3:26) - A Ween cover - one I played from time to time with Sean and Derek. Tried to go all out with the final vocal parts, a lot of fun. This song showed me how hard whistling in tune actually is. From July 2020.

5. Hello Skinny/Constantinople (Residents/Primus) (5:16) - A cover of a cover. Primus did these Residents songs as a bonus track on Frizzle Fry, and this was actually the track that started the whole 2020 recording for me. I learned this one and wanted to record it and it was a lot of fun to play. From July 2020.

6. Mutilated Lips (Ween) (4:36) - Ween cover from The Mollusk - you tune the A string down to G. Didn’t really go all the way with the vocals but it was fun to play. From July 2020.

7. Maggot Brain (Funkadelic) (7:37) - Just an extended solo, covering the amazing Eddie Hazel’s song from the Funkadelic album called Maggot Brain. This was the only take, just wanted it to be a true improv. A Tear For Eddie, to be sure. From July 2020.

8. The Air is Getting Slippery (Primus) (2:25) - A favorite off of Primus’ Pork Soda album, pretty basic to play but fun for sure. I should have gotten a banjo for this one, dang.

9. The Grobe (Ween) - 3:15) - I always liked this Ween song, and finally learned it in 2022. An enjoyable one to play but relatively simple as well. From Summer 2022.

10. Bron-Yr-Aur-Yo (~Led Zeppelin) (5:23) - An interpretation of the Led Zeppelin song. I messed up a bit and just went with it a ways into the song and it stops being a cover I guess at that point. A lot of fun to tune (mostly) to Open C and play. From Fall ‘21.

11. Sky Pup (Melvins) (4:12) - I love this bassline and playing it with Derek. Not really a sludge-y Melvins song but a good one. The lyrics are jibberish but I did reproduce what the internet told me were the words. From Summer ‘21.

12. Those Damn Blue Collar Tweekers (Primus) (4:49) - This is Derek on electronic drums and me on bass/vocals live, then I added guitar later. Fun to play, and this take is probably the best we’ve ever done the breakdown part since we’ve played it. From Fall ‘21.

13. The JAM (Sean Casey) (4:05) - Of course, Sean wrote all the Grandiose, Paper Bullets, and Subterfuge songs, but this was a bassline that he wrote that we never really played as a band - it was just a jam. Derek on electronic drums and me on bass, and fun to play. From Fall ‘21.

14. The Great Gig in the Sky (~Pink Floyd) (5:28) - Taking the beginning of the Pink Floyd song piano part, (never quite learned the turnaround) and then improvising some lyrical weirdness over the loop of that was a fun process. Trying my best at some sort of British accent as well. Rubbish! From Spring ‘21.

15. Transdermal Celebration (Ween) (3:47) - This song has one of my favorite opening guitar lines. The song itself is pretty simple and basic though fun to play. Not too happy with my singing on this one but I do like the guitar solo. From Fall ‘20.

16. De Anza Jig (Primus) (2:52) -

17. Mary at the Checkstand (Paper Bullets) (5:25) -

18. All We Know, All We Do (Subterfuge) (2:47) -

19. Goin’ Blind (Melvins/Kiss) (4:08) -
